  1. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

Ubuntu isn't connecting to the network tonight. It's detecting other networks in the neighborhood, but for some reason it's not picking up the one I'm on right now (using windows).

    Anyhow...
    I...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

I stopped it because as far as I could see it was just going around and around in an unproductive loop, saying the same incomprehensible things over and over.

I did, and it's yes to both...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

Could you explain please? I couldn't find an "etc" tab in the top bar, and when I pasted this into a terminal all I got was "permission denied". So I have no idea what you're asking here.

  5. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

I was already set at Automatic. I did try running sudo dhclient, but it seems not to be recognizing the connection either.

This is what I got the first time I ran it, while I was connected to the...

[ubuntu] Re: Karmic won't boot. Now what?

I'm pretty sure I'm more of a newb than you are. ;)

I find the above understandable enough, but this part has me scratching my head:

How do you do this? What does this "comment" consist...

[ubuntu] Re: Karmic won't boot. Now what?

I booted by the method rexh suggested. Here's what came up in the terminal:

    Does that tell you anything?

[ubuntu] Karmic won't boot. Now what?

I just installed Karmic on an old hard drive which previously had Windows on it, as the sole OS on that disk. After clicking the GRUB option to load ubuntu 9.10, this error message came up:

  10. [ubuntu] Terminal prompts for password; doesn't accept input

While trying to find a clue to yet another layer of my never ending wireless connection problem, I tried to run sudo dhclient.

But after prompting me for my password, the terminal window no...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

Wow, that brought up a whole other problem.

I opened a terminal and typed in "sudo dhclient". Then it prompted for a password, but the window didn't accept input from my keyboard.

    Guess...

[all variants] Ubuntu v. Kubuntu v. Xbuntu?

I just installed Ubuntu 9.1 on a Dell latitude D600, and I see there are some variants available. Just based on their download page, it's hard to tell what (if any) real difference there is between...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

Would if I could, but I can't. It's not my router.
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

Every time I log into ubuntu, it's after having logged into XP and having established a connection.

I keep seeing references to "karmic". What does that mean, specifically? How would that be...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

I tried your suggestion, but it didn't work for me. Here's a copy of the terminal session:
  17. [ubuntu] Re: Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

As I think I said above, I'm posting from that same connection - just in windows.

It's the only wifi point I have access to, and it only gives me trouble in ubuntu.
  18. [ubuntu] Connecting to wireless network, but not to internet

I'm running 9.1, using an external wireless card. As the thread title says, I can connect to the wireless network, but not to the internet. I'm posting this from the same network, only using...
  19. [all variants] Re: HOWTO: Get RTL8187B (ID: 8197) Working. Step by Step

I found my way to the terminal, and tried a command somebody showed me in another thread. If I'm reading it right, it seems to be indicating that the system hasd detected both my internal and...

    [ubuntu] Re: Device manager?

OK, so it's not supported in that the driver isn't embedded in the kernel. It's not embedded in the windows kernel either, but I managed to install it with no problems.

I have the driver. I just...
  21. [all variants] Re: HOWTO: Get RTL8187B (ID: 8197) Working. Step by Step

I'm new to this forum, befuddled by a lot of the jargon, not very adept at using the search function, and this is a dauntingly long thread. So please forgive me if this has already been covered.

This card has the range I need, unlike most other external cards I've tried. It certainly has more range than the internal wifi card on my laptop (a latitude D600), which also doesn't appear to be...

I can't plug directly into the router, nor otherwise get a hard-wired connection.

So does anybody know how to install a driver from disk in case I need to?
