OK...a clue: Whilst in recovery root mode, on inserting the power I do get "Disabling IRQ #16" at about the time the freeze would otherwise occur, but the system does not freeze. Significance anyone?
Yup...ran the following test:
1. Checked and noted contents of dmesg and ~/.xsession-errors
2. Inserted battery, noted system frozen as expected.
3. Removed battery, noted system unfrozen and...

Thanks...no its not that - the battery charges OK and the laptop works ok once the battery is charged and its unplugged...
The problem: Dell e5420, Intel Graphics - When plugged into power with the battery in, the system locks up completely.
Workaround: Unplugging the power OR removing the battery immediately fixes...
There's a bunch of threads on this issue, and there is a temporary and a permanent fix.

Adding the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf

OK - so seems the problems are back with this K3760;
So all was fine with 9.10, just using network-manager without VMC. Until, that is, I got fed up with where I was working having a dodgy signal...
UPDATE: After some updates, hacking around and general frustration I have a solution!
Network manager now works fine - but for some reason I had to run the setup wizrad, go through all the way...
WARNING: KARMIC beta and Vodafone K3760 no longer functional.
OK - now I've installed Karmic beta, and my K3760 is now non-functional again. Would suggest avoid this combination until solved.

Good to hear the post was helpful - agree with the comment about only plugging it once fully up and logged in - and with regard to the dodgy switch, mine is permanently superglued in the open...
Sorry - not checked back lately - but it only works if you insert the usb modem after you have started up/logged in:
1. Start up, log in.
2. Insert usb modem, wait for red light to come on.
