    There is a chance your sound car is busted. Do you have a dual boot you can try it with? Also try booting into a 12.04 live cd to see if the problem can be replicated.

    I had a similar problem with several old Thinkpads.Try removing the battery. It seems that a dead battery (no longer holding charge) can cause this issue under Linux on the thinkpad.

    The 11.6 inch Asus Zenbook seems nice. Its just about as thin and light as the 11.6 inch MacBook Air and its about 250.00 cheaper then the similarly speced Mac.
